If Anyone Is Thirsty

Living full time on the road with a family of eight is an amazing privilege. I would say it is quite a challenge, but the grace and wisdom God has provided over thirty some years makes me see our life, first of all, as a rich privilege. I live an awesome life. In spite of the suffering and persecution we endure, I want nothing else. The faithfulness of the Lord has been evident in our life from our very beginning.

When Michael and I were first married, there was no thought or worry of where we would go or how we would get money. Really. I can’t even remember a single conversation about this. We started out very simply believing Jesus and that His Word was true, that He would provide everything we needed (Mt.6:33). And He has.

As a young woman, as I learned to walk in Jesus, I gained understanding of what He meant when He said to give up your life and live for Him (Jn.12:25, Gal.2:20, 2Cor.5:15). So being submissive to my husband was not a problem, for my life was not my own. God’s word provides this guideline for order in a family (1Pet.3:1, Eph.5:22, Col.3:18).

It has always been my experience as Michael’s wife and the mother of our family to be in the background. Although I deal with the natural feelings as anyone would, of wanting to be heard and noticed, I can see the wisdom and blessing of being in this position. A quiet and gentle spirit is precious in the sight of God (1Pet.3:4). God created this order for a reason, and living according to it, and not the dictates of this world, has brought me great satisfaction and joy. I love knowing that I am serving my husband ”as the Lord” (Eph.5:22). I get to share in his vision and life in Jesus. (Of course, him being a fantastic guy makes it really easy! He’s looking over my shoulder right now and is making me say this or he’s going to squeeze my neck harder….then harder and…ok you get the point)

I can only try to tell you of the deep peace that comes from submitting your will to God. It is right. Most women spend their whole lives trying to prove God wrong and so reap the consequences of their rebellion. I have felt the distain of many women, but yet so many of these women become divorced and take no accountability for their own contentious nature as being the reason. Some women think that having a child is the thing that will fill their void for meaning but then realize that the child grows up and demands tremendous amount of time and suddenly their fantasy is popped like a bubble. They have found no fulfillment in having children.

People would always tell us, Its ok for you to live like this, but just wait till you have children. Then it was, just wait till the terrible twos, then wait till theyre teens and then wait till they want to get married. Well, the youngest of our six children just turned twenty, and Im still waiting. Actually, Im not, because early on I recognized that the people who said such things were only looking for excuses not to follow Jesus, rather than seizing opportunities to see His Word come alive. We are now reaping fruit from the years of teaching, training and disciplining our children (Ps.127:3, 128:3). God promises that if you train a child in His ways, that child will continue in righteousness when he is older (Pr.22:6,15, 23:13 29:15).

You have to realize that to train children in God’s ways has to come out of a relationship with Him. Michael and I have always cherished being transparent with our children, drawing them to know Jesus. They each needed to learn how to love through turning away from selfishness. They are not religious robots, but are six special and unique individuals, each with their own personalities and heart for Jesus.

It kills us to see them suffer but the love we share is more than sufficient. They have suffered much yet each one of them displays God’s love out of their own maturity and desire to please Him. We have always felt that we do not have to hide them from the temptations or cruelty of this world but rather teach them the wisdom to have the frame of mind and attitude to deal with it all. This totally eliminates being under any kind of law or sense of living out of obligation but rather the freedom of the Holy Spirit.

I could go on, and on telling you how great of athletes they are, how talented, smart and creative, how bold, loving and caring, etc. but I won’t. (email me if you want to hear more! As if you ever would…pity you! You can’t be THAT desperate.) But really, I just want to give you hope. “All things are possible to him who believes” (Mt.19:26,Mk.9:23, Lk.18:27). I would strongly encourage any woman out there to first find Jesus before you get married. The guys today are just such wimps and you just don’t know what’s going on inside them.

No matter where you are in your life; married or single, with or without children, Jesus is the answer and knows your specific situation. We each stand alone in this life and before God. Your struggles are not distant from Him. You may have many regrets but God can heal anything and give you a second chance. Nothing in your past can keep you from a future with Christ, unless you let it. The problem is not with Him, it is with you. And Jesus dealt with every one of your problems on the cross. Believe. Give Him a chance to show you and He will.

The clincher for me was where Jesus says "Come to Me...and LEARN from Me" (Mt.11:29). How does one "learn" from an invisible Being? Jesus says the true church are those who learn the things of spirit and truth (not pretense and pomp) (Jn.4:24). Does such a work of the heart not require such things of which no man can describe? Silence, meditation, talking TO God are things of spirit and truth. In this mega-hype culture it can be impossible to force yourself into a stillness of heart. You must do the impossible! Start meditating on the Book of Psalms and the Gospel of John. Wherever you are for five or fifteen minutes. It will seem awkward at first. You will find many voices in your head and feelings of anxiety. You've got to LEARN to silence them. Solitude is essential!

You will find that the reaction by others to this quest, to go directly to Jesus, is treated with presumption; "Oh, of course. I know all that already". Men can work eight hours a day but are too lazy of heart to consider that God's love is of such mysterious and magnificent proportions so as to require a work of individual heart far beyond any passive prayer (Jn.6:27,29). Thus they fall short of His divine Presence. This is the essence of salvation! It was prophecied hundreds of years ago (Jer.31:33-34/Ez.36:26).

This is not the "salvation" of today. Rather it is the unbiblical "accept Christ" prayer-formula that produces plastic "Christians". McDonald's Christianity would have you believe that all you have to do is drive up to the "service" window of any preachers castle and get the salvation-to-go order of repeating a one-time prayer. As if the same generic prayer written for all to parrot has anything to do with the personal heart cry which God requires (Ps.51:17). Like everything in the American culture it is "processed" into an articial and refined response so as to make everyone the same and fit perfectly into their system about Christ.

The brethren in Corinth or Ephesus were the true church who lived as those "set apart" to love Christ rather than this world (1 Jn.2:14ff/Consider Acts 5:32). Luke explains that what Jesus "began to do and teach" in bodily form He now continues in His people in His risen state (Acts 1:1). Their identity was not in an affliation with a particular doctrine, or trying to make this world a better place, but in the power they beheld in their obedient lives looking for the city which is to come . They were uneducated and unlearned but their lives demonstrated that they had actually been with the living Jesus ( Acts 4:13).

Jesus revealed the world is full of religious deception; many "churches", cults and religions (Matt.24). How will you know the truth? Will you learn from a man or go to God? More than ever before, my friend, you must not just go along with everyone. The majority is wrong (Mt.7:13). Don't look at what men SAY. Tons of people claim to be an authority because they have a website or claim to have a following. Like armchair quarterbacks who never played a down of football yet pretend to know what's wrong. Look at their LIVES! Do they just sit around like anyone else claiming to be religious? Or do their lives stand out as a witness? Are they doing something that bears the cross of Christ (Mt.10:38)?

There is nothing wrong with going to a service to try and learn something but watch over your heart (Proverbs 14:23). "...A little leaven levens the whole lump..." (Gal.5:9). Hypocrisy is like toxic waste, it disintegrates sincerity and corrupts anyone with a heart. Don't give yourself over to "church". Learn and go on. You must not settle there. You must keep going. You must get beyond it to learn, build and discover a personal walk with Jesus. We can tell you it is awesome! Do you know His voice? Your life now and your eternity are at stake. This is about your capacity to walk in abundant life or abundant hypocrisy.

For surely there is a true church and is a false church. There is a false christ and a true Christ (2 Cor.11:3-4ff/Mt.24:24,23). Jesus beckons you to come to Him and find the posture of humility to become a disciple and learn directly from Him. His anointing is capable of teaching you all the things (1 Jn.2:27). The idea of God actually coming into your being can only be defined as a mystery (Col.1:27). David said "I have more understanding than all my teachers: for Thy words are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Thy truths" (Ps.119:99ff/read the whole chapter).
